Is Witness Pro worth it? Who should pay, and who should not
The price, what it buys, and the cases where the free app or a different tool is the better choice.
Everything that protects footage in Witness is free and stays free. Pro adds picture quality and a few outputs, so the honest question is whether you need those. This page tries to answer it, including by sending some readers elsewhere. This guide is written by the developer of Witness Camera, so read it with that in mind. Everything about other tools comes from their own sites and store listings, and where Witness is the weaker choice, it says so.
Short answer. Witness Pro costs $1.99 a month or $29.99 once on the US App Store. It adds 4K, 24, 25 and 60 fps, HEVC 10-bit, ProRes (iPhone), Apple Log (iPhone 15 Pro and newer) or 10-bit HDR (Android), burned-in date, time and location, a combined two-camera video, a highlight cut (iPhone) and evidence packages. It is worth it for filmmakers who also want provenance, and for lawyers, NGOs and journalists who deliver evidence packages or on-screen provenance. It is not worth it for filming police encounters, where the free 1080p setting uploads fastest, or if you only want Log or ProRes, where free camera apps exist.
What is free, and stays free
Black-screen recording, upload every 15 seconds to your own storage, SHA-256 hashing, the manifest, independent time-stamping, emergency-contact sharing and dual-camera recording at 1080p. Nothing that protects footage is behind the paywall.
What Pro adds
- 4K, and 24, 25, 30 or 60 fps.
- HEVC 10-bit, ProRes 422 LT or HQ on iPhone, or Mastering on Android.
- Apple Log on iPhone 15 Pro and newer, or 10-bit HDR on Android.
- Visible date, time and location burned into the picture.
- A combined video from both cameras, and on iPhone a shorter cut with the dead air trimmed.
- Evidence packages: a PDF report, the manifest and the time-stamp proof, with no video.
Who should pay
- Documentary and investigative filmmakers who want a gradeable picture and a hashed, time-stamped record in one app. See the filmmakers' guide.
- Lawyers, legal-support teams and NGOs who want to hand a PDF evidence package to someone who will rely on the footage. See the lawyers' guide.
- Journalists whose outlet wants on-screen time and location or 4K. See the journalists' guide.
Who should not
- Anyone filming a police encounter or a protest. The free 1080p setting uploads fastest, and uploaded footage is what survives a seized phone. 4K can outrun your connection, and ProRes never uploads.
- Anyone who only wants Log or ProRes. Blackmagic Camera and Final Cut Camera are listed as free on the US App Store, and are built around manual control and high-end formats.
- Anyone who needs inspection workflows or a team console. Witness has neither.
Monthly or one-time?
$29.99 once is about fifteen months of the $1.99 monthly price. If you need Pro for a project of a few months, the monthly subscription costs less and you can cancel in your store account. If you expect to use it for more than about fifteen months, or simply do not want a renewal, the one-time purchase is cheaper, is tied to your Apple ID and comes back with Restore Purchases on a new phone. On Google Play, the price is shown in the app and on the listing.
Try before you pay
The Pro page in the app shows every control, and the controls are inert until Pro is unlocked, so you can read what each does, and what it costs in file size, before buying. If you cancel, Pro settings return to the free defaults, so 4K goes back to 1080p. Your recordings and their proofs are kept either way. Details are on how Witness Pro works.
Questions
How much does Witness Pro cost?
$1.99 a month or $29.99 once on the US App Store. Prices vary by country and are shown in the app. On Google Play the price is shown in the app and on the listing.
Is the one-time purchase worth it?
It costs about fifteen months of the monthly price. It is cheaper if you will use Pro for longer than that, and it has nothing to renew or cancel.
What happens if I stop paying?
Pro capture settings return to the free defaults, so 4K goes back to 1080p. Your recordings and their proofs are kept.
Do I need Pro to protect my footage?
No. Uploading during recording, hashing, the manifest, the independent time-stamp and emergency-contact sharing are all free.
Try it free first
The free app already has the parts that protect and verify footage. Pro is unlocked from inside it, and its controls are visible before you pay.
